Your calendar, your most important investment portfolio
Show me your calendar, and I will tell you where you will be a year from now.
It sounds simple because it is simple.
Everyone has 24 hours in a day, yet some people take those hours, feel clear and energetic, and build incredible businesses and careers. Meanwhile, most struggle, allowing their calendars to be filled by other people’s agendas.
The power of focus and habits
High performers have learned to focus on what truly matters to them and have established a system of habits that bring them closer to their goals every day. They understand that the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
As the next year approaches, if you have not already developed a practice of defining your personal vision and setting goals on a continuous basis (yearly, monthly, weekly, daily), now is the perfect time to start. This is a crucial step toward self-mastery.
Setting and achieving your goals for the next year
What are the three goals you want to achieve in the next year?
Are these goals meaningful to you?
What would life look like if you achieved these goals by the end of the year?
How would you feel?
What beliefs would you need to adopt to reach them?
What habits would you need to establish to ensure success?
Once you have identified your three goals, write them down on a large piece of paper, break them down into monthly milestones, and place them somewhere you will see every day. Yes, every single day! If that thought does not excite you, revisit your goals - they should motivate you.
And those goals? They need to be reflected in your investment portfolio - your calendar.
Investing your time wisely
Let us assume one of your goals is to manage your energy well and get into the best shape of your life. This needs to be scheduled in your calendar, or it won’t get done - we all know this.
So, how important is energy and health to you? If it’s a priority, how much of your 24 hours are you investing in energy management?
What time are you blocking consistently in the next year for stretching, walks, strength training, cardio, and other sports you enjoy?
What habits are you developing around healthy eating?
How are you managing your mental energy through practices like meditation, rest, and sleep?
How are you nurturing your emotional energy by bringing joy into your daily life?
Energy is critical to high performance, but whatever your goals for the next year might be, ensure you block time in your calendar to work toward them consistently.
Your calendar is your future self’s investment portfolio
Consider your calendar your investment portfolio for your future self. The return on this investment might be more rewarding than you could ever imagine.
