Who wants more focus? Strategies for mastering attention in a distracted world

Everyone wants more focus. But often, it is complicated. Too much information, too many options, too much distraction. Poor focus not only leaves us feeling restless but also leads to poor decision-making, lack of energy, overwhelm, and confusing leadership. And the list goes on.

The challenge of maintaining focus

Every client I work with faces this challenge. In today’s fast-paced world, attention and focus are our most precious currencies. Only by consciously steering our focus can we create an authentic life, drive innovation in business, and build a better future.

How to improve your focus: Top 3 focus techniques

Here are my top three strategies for enhancing focus and mastering your attention:

  1. Know what you really want:

    • Clarity is key. Invest time in gaining clarity and strategising for yourself - not just your business. This is a lifelong process, but it’s proven that dedicating more time to planning leads to better leadership and less stress. Break it down into yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily planning.

  2. Change your story:

    • The stories we tell ourselves shape our reality. To improve focus, you must change these narratives and take yourself more seriously. Some common stories to reconsider include: “Having a plan for my private life is limiting,” “I feel guilty taking breaks,” “I always say yes to meetings,” or “I must respond immediately.”

  3. Reduce distractions:

    • Training your brain to slow down and reducing distractions is essential. Tame your "monkey brain" and tech addictions by saying no to what does not serve you, locking your phone away, practicing meditation, and spending time in nature. This step is the most challenging, but it’s also the most crucial - without it, the rest won’t work.

Your focus determines your reality

Remember, your focus determines your reality. Protecting and enhancing your focus is essential to achieving your goals and leading a more intentional life.

So, what steps are you prepared to take today to protect (y)our most precious resource - focus?
