Who is still waiting for a title to lead?
Can we agree that the world needs more leadership? But does it need more titles?
The truth is, in everything we do, we influence ourselves and those around us. In a way, we cannot not lead. Yet, many of us feel there are designated leaders who make decisions, while the rest of us simply follow.
As Alice Walker wisely said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they do not have any.” I must admit, I’ve fallen into this trap at times in my career.
Having held various leadership roles in a matrix consulting organisation, I learned to work with role-based leadership - but I was also chasing the title. Until one day, I realised that the title wasn’t what I truly wanted.
This realisation led me into the field of coaching, where I now help entrepreneurs, innovators, and purpose-driven leaders increase their impact.
Leadership without a title: The Robin Sharma approach
Robin Sharma’s concept of leadership without a title resonates deeply with me. According to him, true leadership focuses on five key qualities:
Innovation: Continuously improving, making today better than yesterday.
Mastery: Dedicating focused time to develop mastery in your field.
Authenticity: Being yourself in a world that constantly tries to make you someone else. Trusting in your potential and talents.
Guts: The bigger your dreams, the greater the resistance. Having the courage to see opportunities where others see challenges.
Ethics: Always doing what is right - you will never go wrong with integrity.
As Orison Swett Marden said, “Money, influence, and position are nothing compared to brains, principles, energy, and perseverance.”
Step up and lead: No title required
So, if you have been waiting to step up, remember: Roles and titles come and go. What truly matters is how you lead yourself and others.
Who is still waiting for a title to lead? Where can you step up and take more leadership - at home, at work, in your community?
