Leadership skill #1: The power of deep listening

Deep listening is an essential leadership skill - one that involves truly hearing others and understanding the deeper meaning behind their words. In countless situations and transformation programs, I have observed that leaders often focus solely on one-way communication, neglecting the crucial aspect of listening.

What is deep listening?

Deep listening means listening from a place of care and curiosity, tuning into the deeper levels of intention and meaning in the other person. As a coach, I practice deep listening to best serve my clients, and I also teach leaders how to become more effective active and deep listeners.

Active listening involves being fully present and focused on what someone is saying - without splitting your attention or formulating responses while they speak. Deep listening takes this a step further by fully understanding the emotions and meaning behind the words, allowing you to connect on a more profound level.

How to train deep listening

To master deep listening, you must approach conversations without judgment or agenda, embracing curiosity and openness. Ready to learn. Here is how you can train this essential leadership skill:

  1. Stay present: Give the other person your full attention. The moment you start judging or thinking about your response, you are no longer fully listening.

  2. Listen for emotions: Beyond the facts, listen for the emotions behind the words. This helps you see the world through the other person's eyes and truly understand their perspective.

  3. Reflect and inquire: Play back what you have understood and ask curious follow-up questions. This deepens the conversation, fosters connection, and creates new perspectives.

Be prepared to be amazed by how conversations can evolve when you practice deep listening. People connect on a deeper level, and together, you can create new ideas and insights.

Deep listening is the #1 skill for creating a safe space where your team and organization can evolve and innovate.
