How much do you invest in learning? Strategies for intentional growth
These days, the concept of lifelong learning is everywhere.
But what are we actually learning intentionally? How much time do we invest in acquiring new skills—not just reading a random article on social media, but truly learning something that will help us develop and achieve our long-term goals or dreams?
As Robert Louis Stevenson wisely said, “Do not judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.” So, what seeds are you planting? What skills are you building, and how are you doing it? And most importantly: when do you make time for it?
The importance of intentional learning
Throughout my consulting career, I often joked that I was paid to learn. Even as an expert in certain areas, every new client or project required adaptation and quick learning. However, when I set out to start my own coaching business, I realised just how much there was to learn. To succeed, I had to be very intentional - focusing on what mattered, moving quickly, and avoiding overwhelm.
For example, my learning focus this month is storytelling - again.
How to invest in your learning
Here are some strategies that help me learn effectively:
Be explicit about learning: Know exactly what you want to learn and why it matters to you.
Identify knowledge gaps: Speak to experts and figure out where to start. Understanding what you do not know is crucial.
Treat learning as a project: Create a plan with a focus topic for each month. This approach keeps you organised and focused.
Block time for learning and integration: Theoretical knowledge does not stick without application. Make sure to schedule time for both learning and integrating what you have learned.
Learn with others: Find like-minded people or experts to learn with. For example, I discuss the books I am reading with my training partner, which deepens my understanding.
What would you choose to learn?
If I gave you two hours each week for dedicated learning, what would you choose to learn?
Being intentional about your learning journey can make a significant difference in your personal and professional growth.
