Change means making different choices
In a world that is constantly changing, you would expect a lot of new thinking. However, the shocking reality is that 95% of our thinking is just repeating the past. By the time we reach 35 years old, our behaviors, thoughts, emotions, habits, attitudes, and perceptions are deeply ingrained, guiding us unconsciously.
When you start your day without intention, you will likely tap into the familiar thoughts of the past, with emotions attached to past experiences. This familiar past soon becomes your predictable future.
To break free from this cycle, the 5% of new thoughts you have must count. You need to consciously choose to create the future you want - for yourself and your organization.
Why change is hard: The challenge of making different choices
We all know how difficult it is to change. However, change simply means making different choices. Think about the last time you tried to establish a new exercise routine? Learn a new skill? React differently to your partner?
It takes time - 30 days the experts say. Most of the times it takes longer. And it takes enormous will power. The old habits can feel like a rubber band - snapping back any moment you do not pay attention.
For example, I am currently working on building the habit of writing. My 5% of new thoughts tell me to share the amazing coaching insights I have gathered with the world by posting regularly. However, the 95% often resist, making writing feel difficult.
Strategies to make new choices stick
Here are some strategies to help you make those new choices and build lasting habits:
Be clear about what you want to change and why: Understanding your motivation is crucial for staying committed.
Get comfortable with discomfort: Embrace the struggle as part of the process.
Visualise the new experience: Teach your body emotionally what the new experience will feel like through visualization.
Use triggers to remind yourself: Set reminders to reinforce the new habit.
Act accordingly: Take action, even if it feels uncomfortable. Over time, your willpower will become stronger than your autopilot.
Growing and shaping your future isn’t always joyful - it is hard work. But as you get closer to your dream future, it becomes empowering, maybe even addictive - in a good way.
