Why updating your autopilot is key to driving innovation and change
If you want to drive innovation and change, it is essential to understand how our minds work. I wish I had grasped the power of our mental operating model earlier in life. As a consultant, I spent most of my life relying on my brain.
But I am not my brain.
Our brain consumes massive amounts of energy - approximately 25% of our total energy. The dilemma is that our brains are designed to save energy and keep us safe by defaulting to autopilot:
Reducing decision-making
Minimizing risk-taking
Simplifying our perception of ourselves, others, and the world
This is where selective perception, the need to be right, and fixed mindsets come into play. To create innovation and build a better future, we need to regularly stop and update our autopilot.
Why updating your autopilot is crucial
Updating your autopilot is key to fostering change and innovation. Here is how to do it:
Become more conscious: Pay attention to what you think and feel. Awareness is the first step toward change.
Raise your ambition: Decide what you truly want and set higher goals. This will push you out of your comfort zone.
Build new habits: Take small steps to form new habits, which will gradually update your autopilot and drive lasting change.
A powerful habit for consciousness: morning pages
One habit that has helped me become more conscious is “Morning Pages” by Julia Cameron:
Sit down first thing in the morning: Write three pages by hand about whatever comes to mind.
Put them away and repeat: Do this every morning to clear your mind and gain deeper insights.
To understand yourself better, write. Then, rewrite your story.
What helps you stay present and conscious?
